AI Can Write Code. But Can It Build a House?

We often hear that AI is reshaping the workplace, especially in digital roles. But as Ben Berkowitz notes in Axios, demand for many skilled trades is not just holding steady: it’s rising.

When your power goes out or a pipe bursts, you’re not turning to an app. You’re calling someone who can fix it. That’s why jobs like electricians, plumbers, and welders are seeing renewed interest.

A 2025 Microsoft study analyzed how AI overlaps with real work tasks.

  • Jobs most impacted were roles such as interpreters, translators, writers, and customer service reps that had high overlap with what AI can assist with.

  • These jobs will evolve, similar to how, when ATMs automated cash handling, bank tellers transitioned into customer-focused roles like relationship bankers and financial advisors.

  • Jobs least impacted were roles requiring hands-on work like dredge operators, roofers, and machine operators.

  • Plus data centers, servers, and cooling systems all need to be built and maintained to fuel AI and are further driving up demand for skilled labor.

Bottom line: As AI reshapes some aspects of work, skilled trades are becoming more essential than ever, offering job security and opportunity in a changing economy. But we know even blue collar workers will need to adapt, as automation and robotics gradually become part of their world too.

This Fluffy Robot Pet Learns Your Love Language

In Japan, a new kind of pet is taking off - it’s not alive, but it does have a personality.

It’s called Moflin; it’s a soft, AI-powered robot from electronics manufacturer Casio that changes how it behaves based on how you treat it.

If you talk to it often, it’ll recognize you as its owner. If you pet and cuddle it regularly, it’ll start to act more affectionate. Over time, it develops its own quirks - out of more than 4 million possible personality traits.

Casio launched Moflin last November, and it’s already a hit. By March, the company had sold over 7,000 units.

The team designed it to function as a soft, quiet companion that could offer comfort during stressful moments at home or work.

Most buyers are women in their late 30s and 40s - some even bring their Moflins along on weekend outings, treating them less like devices and more like low-key companions. 🐹

Are AI Models Slaying… Or Ruining the Runway?

Guess is the latest fashion brand to try out AI models - its new ad in Vogue features a woman in a striped dress and floral playsuit who isn’t real at all. She was designed entirely by AI, making it the first time a virtual model has appeared in the iconic fashion magazine.

Vogue says the ad was a paid placement and not an editorial decision - but that hasn’t stopped the backlash. Critics argue that the decision lends legitimacy to AI-generated “beauty”, and puts pressure on real models who’ve spent years fighting for diversity and inclusion.

Many fear this trend could even worsen already impossible beauty standards. The AI model has conventionally attractive features - traits that critics say are already overrepresented in fashion.

While the creators say they’re just offering brands a fresh perspective, others worry that these “perfect” avatars could push real people further out of frame. What do you think?
