NEWS YOU CAN’T MISS

Do You Know An AI “Good Girl”?

Do you know someone who is a "Good Girl" when using AI? It sounds ridiculous, I know. But here’s where it's coming from.

Recent studies have revealed an unfortunate gender gap in AI tool adoptions, specifically ChatGPT.

► A Danish study of 100,000 workers found women are up to 20% less likely to use ChatGPT compared to male peers in the same jobs.

► A Norwegian study found high-performing female students are especially hesitant to adopt AI tools.

So what's driving this disparity? Researchers suggest several factors:

► The "Good Girl" effect: Norwegian researchers observed that high-achieving women often avoid AI due to self-imposed restrictions. As Siri Isaksson put it: "It's the 'good girl' thing... It's this idea that 'I have to go through this pain, I have to do it on my own and I shouldn't cheat and take shortcuts'."

► Confidence gap: The Danish study found that women who didn't use AI were more likely than men to report needing more training to use the technology effectively.

So which one do you think it is? Personally, I use AI chatbots every day and it really helps my productivity. It's disheartening for me to see this gender disparity. 😔

CASE STUDY

Amazon saves $260m annually with Gen AI

Who said this about Generative AI? "It’s been a game changer for us." It was Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon. I bet you can't guess why.

It wasn't about some exciting AI chatbot that spoke to customers.

► It was about how its coding assistant Amazon Q, has dramatically reduced software upgrade time from 50 developer days to mere hours. 🤯

► 79% of AI-generated code reviews were shipped without modifications. 💰 This translates to a massive annual saving of $260 million and of 4,500 developer-years for Amazon.

Before I go on, please read the above line again 👆🏽.

The way companies often save money is by automating those tedious, time-consuming tasks that can quietly save them millions of dollars.

So please don't think the real power of AI is only in the flashy, attention-grabbing applications. Often, it's in the mundane.

WOMAN IN TECH

Meet Anu Bharadwaj, President of Atlassian

Celebrating this week's Woman in Tech 🥳: Meet Anu Bharadwaj, President of Atlassian, the leading SaaS company valued at more than $45 billion.

A tech leader with nearly 20 years of experience, Bharadwaj has led teams and initiatives across Microsoft and Atlassian.

Born in India, Bharadwaj earned a Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering from RV College Of Engineering.

► She began her career at Microsoft in 2003 as a Software Design Engineer. In her 10-year tenure there, she led the team in charge of enhancing Microsoft's Visual Studio.

In 2014, she joined Atlassian as the Head of Product for Jira, the company’s issue and project tracking software. Under her leadership, Jira transformed from a single application to a family of products, and Atlassian went public with a market cap of $4.37 billion.

In her 10 years at Atlassian, Bharadwaj served as Head of Product for Atlassian Cloud, Chief Operating Officer, and now President, introducing several services such as Atlassian Home and People Directory along the way. Under her Presidentship, the company has added more than $4 billion to its market cap.

Bharadwaj’s work has led her to be featured as one of Women in Tech’s Top 100 Executive Women in Tech to Watch in 2024.

Fun Fact: Bharadwaj decided to take a sabbatical in 2016 to do fieldwork on wildlife conservation projects. Her work ranged from monitoring penguin rookeries in Antarctica to putting GPS collars on cheetahs in Namibia, which she shared helped her become a better leader.

Articles I’ve Been Reading:

Waymo, the self-driving car company, is exploring a subscription program that would allow teenagers to hail their robotaxis independently. Parents would be able to track their child's whereabouts during rides and receive pickup and drop-off notifications. This potential service is still in the research phase, but it could offer a new level of convenience and independence for families.

Meta and Spotify CEOs argue that the EU's strict AI regulations are hindering innovation and preventing European businesses from accessing the latest AI technologies. They warn that this could lead to Europe falling behind in the global AI race. The CEOs cite a recent application of the GDPR that delayed Meta's AI model training and state that Meta won't release upcoming models in Europe due to regulatory uncertainty.

Perplexity AI, despite facing plagiarism accusations, plans to launch ads on its increasingly popular search app. The company has addressed the accusations by making changes to its citation practices and introduced a revenue-sharing model with publishers. The upcoming ads will target specific categories and leverage the app's user base, which is highly educated and affluent. This move positions Perplexity AI as a potential competitor to Google in the AI-assisted search space.

So honored and delighted to be featured in Prestige magazine's Women of Power 2024 list. 🥳
