China’s Robot Boyfriend Era Just Launched

Chinese robotics company UBTech just soft‑launched a “robot boyfriend/girlfriend”.

The new U1 humanoid — sold in “male” and “female” versions — has already pulled in nearly 4,000 pre-orders and over $1.4M in deposits within its first 10 days, signaling real consumer appetite.

These are full-size, hyper‑real bots with 88 degrees of freedom for fluid, humanlike motion, dressed in a suit or black dress (buyers can personalize the robot's physical appearance).

Built with soft silicone skin and mechanical "muscles" beneath the surface, the face can pucker, wrinkle, and smooth out in real-time, matching expressions to conversations without robotic lag.

The system features a "nurturing" large AI model that remembers past conversations. It uses context from previous interactions to evolve its personality, building deeper empathy and understanding the more a user interacts with it.

Note that it’s exclusively marketed to adult buyers, particularly targeting young singles and tech/anime enthusiasts. Pre-orders on JD.com require about a $450 deposit, with final pricing dropping at the end of June and shipping slated for September.
