The $21M AI Scam That Fooled Investors

Spanish police has arrested 6 people that used deepfake videos generated by AI to scam over $21 million from unsuspecting victims.

Here’s how it unfolded:

The criminal ring used deepfake technology to create highly convincing videos of celebrities promoting a fake cryptocurrency investment scheme. These videos were then placed as ads across websites and social media, luring people in with the promise of huge returns.

But the scam didn’t stop there. Once someone “invested,” they were later contacted by the same group—this time pretending to be Europol agents. Their story? The funds were “frozen” due to suspicious activity, and the only way to unfreeze them was to send more money. It was a multi-layered manipulation play, using AI and impersonation to keep victims hooked.

208 people fell victim to the scam. One man lost over $700,000. 😢

Bottom line: This wasn’t just a case of old-school fraud with a modern twist—it’s a glimpse into how AI can supercharge deception at scale.

Netflix Teams Up with OpenAI to Read Your Vibes

Ever sat down to watch something… but couldn’t decide what to pick?

Netflix is testing a new way to help—by letting you search based on how you feel. Happy, nostalgic, heartbroken, or just bored? You might soon be able to type that in—and get shows that match your mood.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Netflix is working with OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) to create a smarter search tool.

  • Instead of searching by title or actor, you can now say things like “lighthearted mysteries” or “shows that feel like a hug.”

  • Right now, it’s being tested on iPhones in Australia and New Zealand. It’s optional, and only a few people can try it.

Netflix says it’ll roll out to the US soon—but only on iOS for now.

The company has used AI behind the scenes for years to recommend what you might like. This is the next step: letting you tell Netflix exactly what kind of vibe you’re in.

Sure, it helps cut through the content chaos, but handing over your feelings? That’s a whole new level of “Netflix knows me too well.” 😬📱🍿

Would You Text M3gan the AI Doll?

Imagine you’re settling into your seat for a spooky movie night, excited to watch M3gan, the AI doll turned terror from the 2022 horror film. You’ve got your popcorn, the lights dim, and just as the movie starts, you get a ping—from M3gan herself.

Meta’s latest partnership with Blumhouse means cinema-goers will be encouraged to pick up their phones during the film and send direct messages to a special Instagram account. Viewers will be chatting with the film’s AI doll, “M3gan”.

You can ask her questions, get exclusive behind-the-scenes content, and dive into trivia about the film while it’s playing. And expect M3gan to reply in her usual... charming way.

I love this new twist on the horror movie experience, making it all feel much more realistic. But not everyone thinks it’ll work, especially with all the phones flashing in the dark. What do you think?

Would you text M3gan while watching the movie?

Could AI Change How We Build Software Forever?

Screenshot from the interview

I watched OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar’s interview with Goldman Sachs, where she introduced a new concept the company is working on: A-SWEs, or Agentic Software Engineers.

What makes these A-SWEs different from regular AI tools is that they are built to take over the entire development process, from planning to debugging. They can autonomously build apps, run tests, fix bugs, and even handle documentation—tasks that typically take up a lot of developers' time and are often less exciting.

Why it’s important: Developers currently spend 35% of their time managing code, including maintenance, testing, and security. Automating these tasks could free up time for software engineers, allowing them to focus on the bigger picture of development instead.

Watch the full interview here—and while you’re at it, ask yourself: what would it look like if AI took 35% off your plate?

Articles I’ve Been Reading:

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is quietly developing its own AI-powered smart glasses. The company is currently in discussions with suppliers to determine the design, features, and pricing of the device.

The move places ByteDance in competition with other tech giants like Meta and Alibaba, who are also investing in AI-integrated wearables. ByteDance is reportedly aiming to differentiate itself by prioritizing high-quality photo and video capture—while ensuring battery efficiency.

This isn’t the company’s first venture into AI hardware. Last year, it introduced wireless earbuds in China that enabled users to interact with its AI assistant, Doubao, completely hands-free.

Between their earbuds, virtual reality play with the acquisition of headset maker Pico and a recent partnership with Qualcomm (a global leader in advanced chipsets for mobile and wearable devices), it’s clear ByteDance wants to be more than just your favorite app. They’re going full ecosystem. 👓🤖

Until next time!
