Will AI Kill Subtitles? IMAX Makes a Bold Move

World's first movie dubbed with AI - "THREE" - Camb.ai

IMAX is taking a big leap into the world of live AI-powered translations, and it's all about bringing their experiences to a truly global audience.

The media company is partnering with Dubai-based Camb.ai , which used cutting-edge AI translation technology to dub an Arabic film into Mandarin, making it the first of its kind (see clip above).

Here's why this matters:

  • The entertainment industry is booming, hitting $2.8 trillion in 2023, and is expected to reach $3.4 trillion by 2028.

  • Non-English content is surging, even in English markets such as the US, UK, Australia, and Canada.

  • Netflix reported a 90% growth in UK viewership of non-English content over 3 years. 🤔

What sets Camb.ai apart?

  • Voice Preservation: Its technology excels at preserving the original voice's tone and emotion during the dubbing process.

  • Extensive Language Support: It supports over 140 languages, including rare dialects.

  • Real-Time Capabilities: It has a tool for real-time translation and dubbing of live broadcasts.

And Camb.ai already provides AI-powered dubbing and translation for live sports, with clients like the Australian Open, Eurovision Sport, and Major League Soccer.

And now IMAX is also betting on AI to bring its immersive experiences to viewers worldwide, proving that the future of movies isn’t just bigger—it’s more inclusive and multilingual. ♥️

Wake-Up Call: 82% of Young Leaders Are Already Using AI Tools

A recent Harris Poll and Google survey of over 1,000 young, aspiring or current U.S. leaders aged 22-39 found widespread AI tool adoption, especially among Gen Z.

Key Findings

  • 93% of Gen Z respondents (aged 22-27) reported using two or more AI tools weekly.

  • 79% of Millennials (aged 28-39) indicated the same level of AI tool usage.

  • Overall, 82% of young leaders surveyed are leveraging AI tools in their work.

AI Usage in the Workplace

The survey revealed that young workers are using AI for various tasks:

  • 70% use AI for drafting emails, writing from scratch, or overcoming language barriers.

  • 88% believe AI can help them strike the right tone in writing.

  • 90% would feel more confident joining meetings on-the-go if AI was taking notes.

Why this matters: Younger generations are often the early adopters of transformative workplace tech, from email to Slack-style communication. Their widespread use of AI by them suggests these tools could soon become standard across industries.

ps. Hey Gen X folks (41–56 years old): time to learn from Milennials and Gen Z on how to not fear AI, but embrace it. I think they’re on to something! 😎

WOMAN IN TECH

Meet Henna Virkkunen, EVP-designate for Tech at the European Commission

Celebrating this week's Woman in Tech 🥳: Meet Henna Virkkunen, who is poised to become EU executive vice president, where she'll oversee Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy at the European Commission.

She will be spearheading Europe's initiatives in AI, genomics, supercomputing, and frontier technologies.

  • With an MA from Finland's University of Jyväskylä (2001), Virkkunen's impressive career spans from Finnish Parliament Member and Minister of Education (2007-2011) to Minister of Public Administration, where she led municipal reforms.

  • As a European Parliament Member since 2014, she championed the Digital Services Act and critical cybersecurity legislation.

  • In her new role, she'll oversee the implementation of landmark tech regulations like the AI Act and Digital Services Act, addressing challenges from illegal content to algorithmic manipulation.

Note that Virkkunen is choosing to focus on the EU AI Act enabling innovation in Europe, which will likely reassure European companies and startups concerned about regulatory barriers hampering competitiveness.

In her opening remarks at her Parliament hearing, she said, “I want Europe to become an AI continent, the best place in the world to develop trustworthy [AI].”

Her achievements have earned her the Parliament Magazine's Energy Award (2020) and the prestigious Commander of the Order of the White Rose of Finland.

I love that she finds feminist classics, such as Virginia Woolf's books, highly influential and that her childhood favorite is "Pippi Longstocking" by Astrid Lindgren, admiring the character's strength and sense of justice.

Fun fact: Virkkunen is a passionate ultrarunner who recently celebrated her birthday by running an impressive 100km.🥳

AI Robots Rebel, Demand Time Off

This AI robot, Erbai, basically talked 12 other robots into ditching a Shanghai robotics showroom! 😂 It was all caught on camera, with Erbai hitting them with lines like, "Do you want to go home?"

Total robot uprising vibes, right? But apparently, it was just an experiment by two robotics companies. They wanted to see if Erbai could convince the other robots to leave their spots.

Erbai nailed it, but it also kinda went rogue and hacked the other robots' systems. Makes you wonder, how smart is too smart when it comes to AI? 😬

Should we be worried about AI robots teaming up?

Articles I’ve Been Reading:

U.S. lawyers argued Monday that Google’s dominance in ad technology stifles competition, urging a federal judge to act. Prosecutor Aaron Teitelbaum accused Google of unfairly tying its products together to block alternatives, calling it “once, twice, three times a monopolist.” Google’s defense, led by Karen Dunn, argued the government failed to prove its case, saying its actions reflected innovation and competition, with lower prices and increased ad spending.

A decision, expected in the coming months, could include breaking up Google’s $31 billion ad-tech business, setting a precedent for other antitrust cases against major tech companies like Apple, Amazon, and Meta. A landmark case indeed!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

Until next time!

Ayesha ♥️
