Will AI Win Every Nobel Prize One Day? 🔮
The Nobel Prize Committee for Chemistry announced this year’s laureates (on screen L-R), David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper. JONATHAN NACKSTRAND/AFP via Getty Images
It's official – AI has arrived! 😎 The 2024 Nobel Prizes have highlighted the profound impact of AI on scientific progress, with groundbreaking contributions recognized in both Physics and Chemistry.
Physics Prize: Pioneers John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton, whose foundational work on neural networks paved the way for today's AI revolution, have been awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physics.
Chemistry Prize: In an exciting turn of events, AI researchers also dominated the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper received the award for their innovative use of AI to predict and design protein structures, revolutionizing fields like drug discovery and disease understanding.
While AI-generated videos and chatbots grab headlines, the true potential of AI, in my opinion, lies in its ability to accelerate scientific discovery. Complex tasks that once took years can now be completed in a fraction of the time, unlocking huge opportunities for breakthroughs in medicine, materials science, and beyond.
Here’s what I am thinking: Could we see AI researchers, or even AI agents themselves, one day winning Nobel Prizes in all fields, including Economics or Literature? Yes I think we just might. 😎
ps. Several of these Nobel laureates have been vocal about the potential risks of AI. They have repeatedly emphasized responsible development and ethical considerations since they, more than anyone else, recognize the power of AI. I totally agree with them!
The Rise of the AI-Powered Workforce
Lawyers with an AI assistant
In the bustling corridors of tech giants and pharmaceutical behemoths, a silent revolution is underway. AI is reshaping jobs from legal departments to coding labs. Here are two recent examples.
Google DeepMind and Bayer have both reported significant efficiency gains by implementing AI in their legal departments:
Google DeepMind exec says AI handles 40-50% of information requests sent to its legal department.
Pharmaceutical giant Bayer exec said it utilizes AI to complete 70-80% of regulatory filings required for drug development. 🤯
At the same time, AI mega startup Anthropic’s co-founder said the company is using AI to assist with coding tasks:
Anthropic's developers have "dramatically increased their productivity" by using AI for coding assistance, she said, to the extent that the company is reconsidering its hiring plans 2025. 😲
Bottom line: AI is transforming the workplace by acting as a "co-pilot" for our careers. It automates routine tasks like legal paperwork and also helps with creative work like coding, allowing humans to focus on more strategic and complex work.
My advice: Senior pros? Ditch the grunt work and go strategic. Junior pros? Level up your skills and output with AI by your side. Adapt and thrive in this new era of work!
WOMAN IN TECH
Woman in Tech: Meet Kate Ryder, CEO of Maven Clinic
Celebrating this week's Woman in tech 🥳: Meet Kate Ryder, founder and CEO of Maven Clinic, the world’s largest virtual clinic for women's and family health, that has just been valued at $1.7 billion.
Ryder grew up in Minnesota in an entrepreneurial family and got a BA from the University of Michigan and an MA from the London School of Economics.
Ryder then worked in journalism, writing for publications like The Economist and The Wall Street Journal.
Founding Maven
In 2014, Ryder founded Maven Clinic as a platform that offers comprehensive services across fertility, maternity, and pediatrics.
Ryder faced 40 rejections when fundraising but eventually raised $400M from investors like Sequoia and Oprah Winfrey, making it the first U.S. unicorn in the women's and family health sector.
It now serves over 2,000 clients in 175 countries, including major corporations like Amazon, AT&T, Morgan Stanley, and L'Oreal.
Maven’s virtual care has led to better clinical outcomes, such as an 8-20% reduction in C-section rates and a 20-28% reduction in NICU admissions.
Recognition:
Maven was named #1 Most Innovative Healthcare Company by Fast Company in 2020 and Ryder was named to Time’s 100Next list in 2023. ⭐️
When you hear Ryder speak, you can tell she’s totally committed to women’s health and family wellness. She herself experienced a traumatic miscarriage in a public triage room at a hospital in 2015, which further fueled her compassion for women in such positions.
Today, Ryder lives with her husband and three children in Brooklyn, New York, one of my fave places 🗽.

Change your background and what you’re doing in seconds on Insta
Have you seen Meta's latest AI creation? Movie Gen is seriously next-level! 🤯
You can literally upload a photo of yourself and have the AI create a video of you doing pretty much anything – wearing different clothes, exploring new places, even riding a horse in Colorado! (Seriously, watch this clip below).
It's kinda wild, and I’m excited to try it on my Reels when it launches next year (teaser videos are here). Would you use this to spice up your Instagram?

Very cool to see Mexico coming up as a hub for AI. Foxconn and Nvidia are teaming up to make Mexico a major hub for artificial intelligence, shifting some AI chip production away from traditional hubs like China and Taiwan. Foxconn is building a massive facility in Mexico to produce Nvidia's powerful GB200 superchips, fueling the growth of AI technology and Mexico's economy. This partnership marks a significant shift in the global AI landscape, with Mexico emerging as a key player and potentially reshaping the AI supply chain.
Fortune magazine just published its "Most Powerful Women Asia 2024" list showcasing the most influential and successful women in business across the Asia-Pacific region, choosing women from 11 nations, including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and Australia. I was super excited to see my friend Sandhya Devanathan on the list. She heads Meta in India. By the way, Meta has 400 million users in India (more than the population of the United States).
Forget slow-growth startups, AI companies with a winning product are sprinting to success. ElevenLabs, an AI voice technology company, proves this point. They just secured $80 million in funding, pushing their value over $1 billion. Even more astounding, their annual revenue has exploded from $25 million to $80 million in just months! With 41% of Fortune 500 companies already using their tech to create realistic voices for audiobooks, dubbing, and more, ElevenLabs shows the massive potential of AI to reshape industries at lightning speed.
Me and Ronen talking about AI for the podcast yesterday
Hot off the (virtual) mic! I was a guest on AppsFlyers podcast yesterday, diving deep into the world of AI and its impact on businesses with Ronen Mense.
We explored exciting opportunities, like how AI can boost efficiency and unlock game-changing innovation. But we also tackled the tough questions, like ethical concerns and the skills gap.
Plus, I got to share who I'd invite to my AI dream dinner party. My answer: AI superstar and entrepreneur Fei Fei Li and Singapore’s Digital Minister Josephine Teo.
Until next time!
Ayesha ♥️
